We talked about VR on Linux with software, but what about the hardware? Well here comes the Steam Frame!

Announced the 2025-11-12, it will released in 2026, possibly Q1 2026.

This device have a lot features, but these are the one that I find much interesting:

Having ARM CPU is no surprise on a VR headset, but using SteamOS, an initially x86-64 focus OS, instead of Android, is quite a change.

So if the OS use ARM, what about the software? Most of then, especially the games, are build for x86-64.

So this is were Valve contributions shine, FEX allows you to run x86 applications on ARM64 Linux devices.

Yes, I say contributions, because both are FOSS!

In addition to that, FEX will allow to play games on ARM hardware that rely on battery. So it might also mean in the future, an ARM based Steam Deck.
